What Advantages Does IPP Offer Over LPD or JetDirect?

Both the LPD and JetDirect/AppSocket protocols can be used over the
Internet today, however neither of these protocols provides authentication
services, access control, and all of the document management and formatting (including
printer-specific commands) must be handled by the machine sending the
document. If you don't know what kind of printer is on the receiving end
you may not be able to successfully print your document!
- IPP provides several authentication options, so you can configure your
printer or CUPS server to only accept jobs from known users.
IPP can use TLS or SSL3 for encrypting your confidential documents.
- IPP supports access control which restricts print jobs, job controls, and
system administration commands coming from and to specified computers and printers.
- IPP also supports printer options - you can even ask the IPP device what
options and document formats it supports.
- IPP supports both a "push" method, where clients send files
to servers, and a "pull" method, where servers ask for files from
clients. [Note: CUPS currently only supports the "push" method.]
