Why Are the Margins Wrong for My Printer?

The sample drivers included with CUPS use "safe" margins to work with as many HP and EPSON printers as possible.

For HP LaserJets and compatibles, the sample drivers in CUPS use top and bottom margins of 0.5in (~13mm) and side margins of 0.25in (~6mm) or 0.135in (~4mm). Most of the newer LaserJets can operate with top and bottom margins of 0.17in (4.2mm), however the side margins are as small as supported by PCL. To change the margins you'll need to update the PPD file that comes with CUPS - ppd/laserjet.ppd.

The HP DeskJet driver in CUPS uses the same margins; depending on the printer the actual margins may be as small as 0in (0mm) at the top and 0.46in (~12mm) at the bottom.  To change the margins you'll need to update the PPD file that comes with CUPS - ppd/deskjet.ppd.

The EPSON dot-matrix drivers in CUPS use top and bottom margins of 0.5in (~13mm) and side margins of 0.25in (~6mm).  To change the margins you'll need to update the PPD file - ppd/epson9.ppd or ppd/epson24.ppd.

The EPSON inkjet drivers in CUPS use a top margin of 0.5in (~13mm), bottom margin of 0.56in (~14mm), and side margins of 0.25in (~6mm).  To change the margins you'll need to update the PPD file - stcolor.ppd or stphoto.ppd.
