Stable Release: v8.15.4
CUPS used to provide a customized version of GNU Ghostscript
5.50 to support non-PostScript printers. The customized filter,
called pstoraster, was used by the sample drivers
in CUPS, the GIMP-print CUPS drivers, and the drivers in ESP Print
Pro.
As more Linux distributions began shipping CUPS as their
standard printing system, we received many requests from Linux
distributors to provide patches to the standard GNU/GPL
Ghostscript source distribution so that they could ship a single
version of Ghostscript.
In 2001, EPSON funded Easy Software Products to create
a forked version of GNU Ghostscript 5.50 called ESP Ghostscript
that could be used by all Linux distributors as a common
platform for printing and rendering of PostScript and PDF files.
Easy Software Products continues to release new versions of ESP
Ghostscript based on the current release of GNU/GPL Ghostscript
with help from key Linux and other open source developers.
In 2006, Artifex and the ESP Ghostscript developers agreed to
merge the changes from ESP Ghostscript into GPL Ghostscript, and
to collaborate on a single version of Ghostscript for all
platforms. All development on ESP Ghostscript has ended with the
8.15.4 release.
