It seems that when converting PostScript files to PDF with ESP GhostScript, images in the files are not converted correctly. The conversion itself (using the "ps2pdf" script which comes with ESP GS) gives no error messages, but the resulting PDF file is not correctly displayed. gv and xpdf show the PDF file, but with broken images, acroread gives a "Drawing error" message on pages with images and displays only the text. In kpdf nothing is displayed and the PDF interpreter backend takes 100 % CPU (endless loop?).

An example PostScript file is attached.

The problem did not occur with ESP GhostScript 8.15.1-rc4.

test.ps was created with ghostpdf.ppd from cubeonly.gif on win xp sp2 and can viewed with gsview for windows.

test.pdf was created from test.ps with

/usr/local/bin/ps2pdf13 test.ps test.pdf

Do you need a diff -au from the pdf files created with 7.07.1 and 8.15.1 from the same ps file (7.07.1 is okay, 8.15.1 not)?

How can I help you to solve this problem soon?

Is 8.15.1-rc4 downloadeable anywhere (which has this problem not, as till.kamppeter stated)?
I need properly created password protected PDFs with images and cannot wait some weeks/month/years for a fix...

Mmpf:

8.15.1-rc4 from http://svn.easysw.com/public/espgs/tags/espgs-8.15rc4 is also affected :(
Printing www.fli4l.de as pdf produces unreadeable files for Acrobat Reader (Es ist ein Grafikfehler aufgetreten - in english: Drawing error).

Have to use GPL Ghostscript 8.15 now and forget cups...
GPL Ghostscript 8.15 has no problems with www.fli4l.de and the other posted files here (ecg590i_lecture10.ps).

News from http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=19437:

Downgrading to ESP GhostScript 7.07.x solves the problem. So a regression happened on the switch to 8.15.x.

I can confirm that this bug exists under ESP ghostscript 8.15 on Slackware 10.2.

I can also confirm that the bug does NOT exist under AFPL ghostscript 8.53.

On my system I need to keep an ESP ghostscript around for CUPS to work.  My current workaround has therefore been to compile AFPL ghostscript 8.53, install ps2pdf-related bits to a prefix different to the existing ghostscript and use 8.53 only for PDF creation.

Fixed in Subversion revision r128.

Or use the attached patch from Werner Fink.

Thanks to Werner Fink from SuSE for this fix.
